Indonesia is not a country you may visit for just few weeks. There is so many places to explore that a lifetime is not enough to see them all.
I had the chance to stay 2 months there and to visit very secluded places like the island of Sumatra.
My happiest memory is when I did a multiple days trek in the jungle of Sumatra to see Orangutan. This was the first time I slept in the jungle and it was such a great adventure. It was peaceful and relaxing as if time were standing still.
My 2 days trek on the volcano Merbabu was also one of the most stunning memory of my trip: watching the sunset and sunrise on top of the peak facing the Merapi volcano. Camping there with barely no equipment which was actually not such a good idea considering how cold it can be up there by night... At the end this made this excursion just even more special. I came back from there the nose and front all burnt from the sun and 2 days later lost all my black burnt face skin after showering... I guess sun protection is a good ally to climb a volcano !!
Indonesia is also the place where I found my little peace of paradise, in Karimunjawa an archipel of beautiful islands in the south of Java. We did wild camping on a deserted island there. The water was so clear that you didn't even need to go in to see all the fishes and corals.
The only place I didn't appreciate much was Bali because Bali is so different from the rest of Indonesia. First it is the only non Muslim island I wen to. But it is also one of the most populated island (I mean populated by tourists). The food is less good, the people are less kind and the reason for it is... tourists. Most of them are not very respectful of the local culture and are not even trying for example to taste the local food. I saw so many Pandora shops and pizza restaurants in there... On this aspect, it was a little bit similar to the south of Thailand. But I must reckon despite this massive tourism, some places in Bali can be simply beautiful.
